BFBS Cologne - A Fairytale - watch this

Staff, Presenters, Sound Engineers etc who worked at BFBS Cologne took part at the annual BFBS Cologne Dinner and this year saw the 25th Anniversary after the closure of BFBS Cologne which was based in Parkstrasse 61 in Cologne Marienburg. The last BFBS Cologne Station Manager Colin Rugg opened the evening to welcome all the attendees and guests such as former BFBS Presenters Richard Astbury, Alan Clough, Mark Tyley, Nick Bailey but also remembered the famous BFBS voices that passed away since the last gathering like Peter McDonagh.

During the dinner a video was presented of BFBS Cologne that Tom Hausmann found and kindly shared it with all of us via the internet. Now it is my great pleasure to share that video with the many fans of BFBS Radio.

Richard Astbury in Interview with JP

Richard Astbury
Interview with Richard Astbury on 22 Mar 2014. Richard or Asters worked as radio presenter on BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Service) and was also involved in the Eurovision Song Contest. Hear his story in interview with Radio International's JP

On 21 and 22 March 2014 BFBS Cologne staff (presenters, sound engineers, record librarians, some hadcore fans, etc) held their 24th annual "Veteran Meeting" in a hotel in Cologne, Germany reflecting on the good old times when BFBS Radio in Germany had its headquarters in Cologne Marienburg. In the 90s the HQ moved to the barracks in BFBS Herford leaving behind an amazing nostaligic post war era for Forces Families but also for many German listeners.

One of the great voices and very experienced presenter Richard Astbury also known as Asters. presented many shows on the BFBS network including BFBS Radio 2 and BFBS Television. But he is very much known for his programme called "Pop around Europe" which ran for many years on the BFBS radio network stopping in 1985 with Asters' departure to Riviera 104. This show can be found on the BFBS Radio blog or via the website of www.radiointernational.tv or here and there is more here.

Radio International's JP had the big honour to interview his radio idol Richard Astbury at this convention in Cologne which you can now watch in this clip.

At this point a special thanks goes to Jens Messtorff for filming the interview which will also be broadcast on Eurovision Radio International (www.radiointernational.tv) in the near future.

Also visit Richard's webpage available here.

Richard was also involved in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Enjoy!
JP:)

BFBS Photos added, Tommy Vance, Alan Clough, Richard Astbury, Penny Vine, Rhine Army Summer Show

Tommy Vance and JP at BFBS London in July 1984
Dear BFBS Lovers,

I have been digging in my photo album and came across some photos from the mid 80s when I had a chance to visit the BFBS Studios in London, Paddington (Bridge House) where I had the pleasure to sit in the Top 20 Plus Show with Tommy Vance and also BFBS UK. The guests I remember where the Blue Belles which were charting well in the UK Charts with "Young at heart".

Tommy took me and my friends to London in the nearby pub just across the road.

Since I lived in Cologne the BFBS Germany studios were not far away and I would sometimes swing by to sit in some of their shows such as the weekend breakfast show with Alan Clough. And of course one of the highlights during the year was when BFBS Germany was also at the Rhine Army Summer Show.

A new page has been added to this blog called "Photos" where you can see some of the treasures I found in my collection.

Should you have some photos you want to share with us, please email them to me by clicking here.

Thanks and Enjoy!
JP:)
